Editor's note: This post will be regularly updated with new information about travel restrictions and news. It was last updated on Oct. 24, 2022.
Are you dreaming of brighter days when you can explore the world freely again? We've got good news: The time has come.
After more than two years of travel bans, strict entry requirements, and setbacks, the trend is clear: Almost every country around the globe has reopened to Americans … with few (if any) onerous entry requirements. The days of testing to get in or quarantining upon arrival for an international trip are over. There's no need to worry about testing negative to fly home anymore, either.
All of Western Europe is wide-open like it's 2019 again after Spain quietly dropped all entry requirements last week. After two years of lockdowns, New Zealand and Australia are both open with no entry requirements. Heck, even Japan began welcoming back Americans and other foreign travelers earlier this month.
For those countries that still have travel restrictions in place, a CDC vaccination card may be all you need to enter. Several countries still have testing requirements in place, while fewer still require lengthy quarantine periods or have outright travel bans in effect. But the list of countries with complex restrictions has gotten smaller and smaller over time.
So what will an international trip require? It depends on where you're going. Here's a look around the globe, organized alphabetically by country – click below to jump!

Please add info on Indonesia (Specifically Bali) to your list when updating.

Not quite accurate on Sint Maarten. Some flights are going in and out and there actually is a repatriation flight schedule for June 3 with United which still has seats available. Other flights are scheduled but whether they actually fly or get cancelled remains to be seen. Also spelling mistake in text. The Shelter in Place was lightened but not completely lifted until end May and curfew still remains in effect 11pm – 5am. Border between French and Dutch side is scheduled to re-open June 2nd.
Thank you, Rosalyn. I’ve made some updates.
THANK YOU for this extremely helpful article–both for personal and business travel! You are the best!
Thank you, Janice! We’re happy this helps. 🙂
Interesting the USA is omitted. Obviously for domestic readers only.
I agree. This list is very helpful, but could you include the US, and Hawaii with its own special conditions? Also, I understand Ethiopia is now a travel hub for much of Africa, and would be a good one to include.
Jon- MY husband and I like to travel internationly-your column and travel knowledge is greatly appreciated! Cherrie Z
Hi Jon… excellent updates and very much appreciated. I’m hoping to make it to Brisbane/Queensland Australia in a timely fashion though a second surge of COVID in Victoria and New South Wales plus the ongoing problems here in the United States are sure to close the country to U.S. travelers for months.
I have a friend who left to see his girlfriend from Minneapolis MN USA to Oslo Norway last Wednesday July 15th. He’s staying for 1 month has to self quarantine for 10 days but he didn’t have to have a test preformed before he left.
Scotland?
Hey Patty. Scotland is part of the section on the U.K. The restrictions are very similar for all of those nations.
This is a great resource. One thing I want to flag is that it looks like you use the term “US citizens” pretty widely in the document, but many of the restrictions (including the EU member states) are in fact residency based – so for example, a Canadian citizen living in the United States would not be eligible to enter the EU, but a US citizen living in Canada would.
(Source: https://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/ST-9208-2020-INIT/en/pdf “When deciding whether the temporary restriction on non-essential travel to the EU applies to a third-country national, residence in a third country for which the restrictions on non- essential travel have been lifted should be the determining factor (and not nationality).”)
Also, a minor correction to the Mexico section: nonessential travel at land crossings remains banned, but there have never been any restrictions on air travel between the US and Mexico and flights between the two countries never stopped.
Hi! I am wondering if you are planning to update this post regularly so we can keep and up to date account on travel in the up and coming months? I’m hoping to travel December or January so it would be great to have this to review week by week!! Thank you!
Hi Amanda, we update this post several times a week!
Oh perfect, thank you! The top of the page just says last updated on July 29 so that’s why I asked ☺️
Hello- I don’t think your Hungary regulations are correct. US Citizens are not allowed. The two negative Covid tests is for Hungarian citizens who don’t want to quarantine for 14 days.

Iceland is changing its entry requirements again. Effective 7/26 or 27 vaccinated travelers have to present a negative test. I think the rules are unchanged for non-vax travelers – test + quarantine + test.
Thank you! I’ve updated Iceland with this new information.
Can Guadeloupe be added to list?
Hey Mariusz. I’ve added Guadeloupe to this post.
Thanks much for providing us with up to date information. I fear, however, that with the
serious spread of the Delta variant, that many places will be shut down again and maybe
before the end of summer. The news via newspapers, radio and TV, plus the internet does
not sound positive for the upcoming weeks and months. I realize that this is not a question
so there is no need to respond unless you know more.
Latvia and Lithuania. Please
I’ve added both. Thanks, Patrick!
