There are all-inclusive resorts, and then there is Hyatt's portfolio of all-inclusive Ziva and Zilara resorts. In my experience, they just do things differently … in the best possible way. My recent stay at the Hyatt Ziva Cancún just affirmed that.
Located at the far north end of the famous (or infamous) Cancún hotel zone, it's about a 25- to 30-minute drive from the Cancún (CUN) airport. Whether you are looking for an adults-only getaway or a family-friendly adventure, it's hard to beat: both on quality and price. Especially if you're booking a free all-inclusive stay using points…
After staying at a handful of all-inclusive resorts over the last few years – including several other Hyatt Ziva and Zilara locations – this one quickly vaulted up the list of my favorites. Between the great service, amazing food and drinks, and easily accessible location, it's tough to beat.

- How to Earn World of Hyatt Points
Booking the Hyatt Ziva Cancún
One of the best things about Hyatt Ziva and Zilara (adults only) all-inclusive resorts is that you can book them with World of Hyatt points. Better yet, the rates are very reasonable.
It will generally cost just 25,000 World of Hyatt points each night. Now that Hyatt has implemented peak and off-peak award pricing for stays starting in March 2022, it could cost more (or fewer) points. Expect to pay as much as 29,000 points a night during peak times – or as few as 21,000 points per night during off-peak times.
But if you are booking with World of Hyatt points, 25,000 points will cover up to two people per room, making it a phenomenal deal. Adding a third person to the room will bring the standard points redemption rate up to 37,500 points per night, while four guests per room will bring the rate up to 50,000 points per night.
The Hyatt Ziva Cancún is considered a category 2 all-inclusive resort so the base rate when using World of Hyatt points will be 25,000 points. Only the Ziva properties in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta fall into the category 1 group.
Here's a look at the Hyatt all-inclusive award chart.
Amazingly, that rate includes pretty much everything: Your lodging, all your food, drinks, and most of the amenities the resort has to offer.
The one hitch is that when you are booking with World of Hyatt points, not all dates will be available – it hinges on award availability. And you won't be able to pick different room types – the rooms bookable with Hyatt points are the Resort View king or double beds with a pull-out sofa bed.
If you don’t have World of Hyatt points in your account already, Hyatt is one of the best Chase transfer partners. A stash of 50,000 Chase points gets you 50,000 Hyatt points: enough for two free nights at the Hyatt Ziva Cancun.
Click Here to learn more about the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.
Otherwise, cash rates are typically pretty reasonable as well. Depending on the time of your stay, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $600 a night for a stay at the property. I opted to save my Hyatt points and paid cash for this trip, at about $476 a night. Again, this bill includes your room rate, all your food and drinks, and many amenities at the property.
As you add more people to the room, rates will scale up when you are paying with cash, starting with the second guest.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Location
The Hyatt Ziva Cancún is located on the far northeast side of the famous Cancún hotel zone. In fact, it is the furthest resort from the Cancún (CUN) airport on the main stretch in the hotel zone. Expect about a 25 to 30-minute ride from the airport, depending on traffic.
Because of the property's location, many rooms will have incredible unobstructed ocean views.
The Hyatt Ziva's sister location, the Hyatt Zilara Cancún is located about a mile south of the Ziva. The Zilara is Hyatt's adults-only resort in Cancún which can be booked for very similar rates. You must be 18 or older to stay at the Zilara.
Historically, guests at either the Ziva or Zilara will be able to access the other resort. But at check-in, the Ziva staff member informed me that this is currently not available due to COVID-19 and he didn't have a timetable of when it may return.
Don't confuse the Hyatt Ziva Cancún with the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancún, which is located about 45 minutes south just north of Puerto Morelos.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Airport Transportation
As with most properties in the Cancún area, you won't have too long of a drive from the airport. When it comes to booking your transportation, you'll have a few options.
Unlike many of the other Hyatt Ziva and Zilara locations I have been to, you can arrange airport transportation directly through the Ziva Cancún by contacting the concierge desk before your stay.
However, do yourself a favor and skip this. The rates are about double what you can easily find elsewhere.
Booking a private transfer (or even taking a taxi) is very easy and fairly cheap.
I have used USA Transfers on a few recent trips to Cancún and had great experiences both times. You can book a round-trip transfer to the resort for up to three people for $65. If you have four to seven people it will be $75. It scales up to $90 for eight to ten people.
These rates are comparable to standard taxis as well – plus it's a lot less hectic once you arrive in Cancún.
The service was well organized and on time. They even have a mobile app to keep your reservation and confirmation numbers handy.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Lobby & Check-In
From the moment you get out of the shuttle and walk into the resort, you’ll be wowed by the service and impressive open-air lobby. I was immediately greeted by the warm and welcoming staff who took my luggage and escorted me to the check-in area.
Through a set of sliding glass doors, you'll find the main check-in area.
Because I'm a Hyatt Globalist member – their top elite status tier – I received a complimentary upgrade to an ocean-view club king room, and I was ushered to a private check-in desk which was located in the Club Tower. There was nobody else in the World of Hyatt check-in area when I arrived and it definitely felt a little bit more personal.
While everything was being prepared, I was offered a cold towel and a glass of sparkling wine which I gladly accepted.
Directly behind the check-in desks is a pool table with a few different seating areas for Club Tower guests. You'll also find a set of sliding glass doors that leads out to one of the pool areas on the property.
There was also a bar in the Club Tower with more premium alcohol options and a food spread that changed throughout the day. I didn't eat here during my stay as there were simply too many better options elsewhere on the resort.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Rooms
When booking a room at the Ziva Cancún, you'll have a number of different options – mostly based upon your view.
The base room is a resort view king or double, but you'll also have the ability to book many different ocean view options. But if you are planning to pay with World of Hyatt points, you'll only be able to select a resort view room.
In my experience, you'll be offered many different opportunities to upgrade for a price as long as space is available. And if you hold any level of Hyatt elite status, there is also a good chance you will get upgraded to an ocean view room at no cost. At least that's what happened to me.
For my stay, I booked a resort view king room. But thanks to my Hyatt Globalist status, I was offered a complimentary upgrade to a Club oceanfront king room which was located in the Club Tower on the fifth floor.
My room was perfectly fine, but certainly on the smaller side from what I have experienced at other Ziva and Zilara resorts. At just 463 square feet, these rooms are roughly half the size of what you'll find at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancún or even the Hyatt Ziva & Zilara Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic.
The bathroom was also a little bit on the tight side, but overall very nice and perfectly adequate.
One thing I found interesting is that the Hyatt Ziva Cancún has high-end Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries stocked in the Club Tower Room, which was a nice touch. I haven't seen this at other Ziva and Zilara properties, though it might have been a byproduct of my complimentary upgrade to a higher-tier room.
Within the room itself, you'll find everything you would expect at a higher-end resort. This included a fully stocked minibar with drinks and snacks – also included as a part of the all-inclusive rate. Beer, sparkling water, regular water, juice, and soda were available in the fridge.
Chips, peanuts, Oreos, and a few different candy options were also available. Both the fridge and the snack drawer were restocked each day.
The Hyatt Ziva Cancún also offers 24-hour complimentary room service. Each room is equipped with a tablet that has the breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack menus available. I didn't take advantage of room service during my stay, but it's a nice option.
What my room lacked in size, it made up for with the views from the balcony.
The balcony itself was also on the small side, with just enough room for a cafe-style table and pair of chairs. It was a great place to have a drink and take in the sunset each night during my stay.
I'll let this photo speak for itself. What a view.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Facilities & Amenities
The Hyatt Ziva Cancún is massive. You won't have to work too hard to find things to do or a great spot to relax. The resort has multiple pools, a spa (one of the few amenities not included as a part of your all-inclusive rate), a great fitness center, a Kidz Club, great bars & restaurants, a dolphin pool, and many different activities each and every day.
Ziva Cancún Pools
There are three main pools at the Hyatt Ziva Cancún, each one offering something a little different.
The main pool, which you will find by heading down the steps opposite the open-air lobby, is the largest and by far the most active throughout the day. It's also the only pool with a swim-up bar, and where the entertainment staff spends the majority of their time. If you want action, this is where to find it.
Just in front of the main pool is a large concrete area that was used for many different things throughout my stay. The night I arrived, the entertainment show started out here. The next morning, there was a group fitness class. Throughout my stay, a handful of games, like pickleball, were set up for guests to enjoy.
The main pool is huge and you shouldn't have an issue finding a spot to enjoy. In fact, I never struggled to find a spot throughout my stay with ample seating.
The main pool is also the only pool that has a swim-up bar which was a popular spot. One of the bartenders was making some truly incredible tropical drinks.
Sadly, I didn't have my phone with me in the pool so I wasn't able to get photos of them.
Just off of the main pool is another smaller pool that was a bit more relaxed. During my stay, I saw a lot of younger families using this pool. It isn't connected to the main pool but it's just a short walk away, and the servers did an excellent job of making sure everybody in the pool had what they needed.
Also in the main pool area was a novelty bus that was open from 12 p.m. to 5 pm each day serving up poolside snacks: Hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, and quesadillas were all available. It was a great option for families to grab something quick.
Last but not least, there was a third pool in the very back of the property just past the Club Tower where my room was located. This was easily my favorite pool at the Hyatt Ziva Cancún as it was just a bit quieter, more secluded, and had great access to the incredible beach.
Both of the pool areas also have a hot tub which I found myself spending a lot of time in.
You will have the option to grab a cabana at all of the pool areas, and on the beach … but these are not included in the all-inclusive rate. There are a handful of packages available that will include premium alcohol, massages, and more starting at about $109 per day, though it varies from package to package.
You can learn more about the cabana options on the Ziva Cancún's website.
Ziva Cancún Dolphin Pool
The Ziva Canún has something unique you won't find at any of the other Hyatt all-inclusive locations. A Dolphin tank that is run by a third-party company called Delphinus.
Each day of my stay, the Delphinus trainers were putting on a show. There were also a handful of people who were swimming with the dolphins. You don't have to be a guest of the Hyatt Ziva Cancún to swim with the dolphins, but there is a charge if you wish to partake.
Delphinus says if you book six or more days in advance will provide you with the cheapest rates which you can find on their website.
I found the dolphin tank to be rather sad, especially at night when shows were not going on and the dolphins were moved into much smaller holding tanks. Unfortunately, since the dolphin tank is right in the main area off of the main pool, it is kind of hard to avoid.
But if swimming with dolphins is of interest to you, it is available right in the heart of the resort.
The Ziva Cancún Fitness Center
While working out might not be at the top of your mind for a relaxing tropical vacation, the Hyatt Ziva Cancún does have the facility to make it happen.
The gym is equipped with plenty of cardio machines, free weights, cable machines, and there was plenty of space. One of the Hyatt employees was even walking around handing out wellness shots on the morning I used the gym.
It wasn't as impressive as the fitness center at the Hyatt Ziva and Zilara Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic, but it was more than adequate for my needs.
The Zen Spa
While not included in the all-inclusive rates, the spa offers an onsite oasis for guests of Ziva Cancún.
I didn't use the spa services during my trip, but there are many different treatments available starting at around $180 for a 50-minute massage.
The spa has 13 treatment rooms as well as a number of beachfront palapas, like the one pictured below, where you can also get a massage.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Kidz Club
If you're traveling with kids, the Hyatt Ziva Cancún has a Kidz Club that can be used for children ages 4-12 from 9 am to 9 pm. There are even time slots available for families with younger children to enjoy the space.
The Kidz Club has a daily schedule of activities including arts and crafts, time and the beach, pool, and more.
There is also a great pool and a play area inside the Kidz Club equipped with water slides and a few different play structures. The water looked to only be about a foot deep, making it a good option for younger kids.
I saw a few families using the space during my trip and it looked like a hit.
For older kids, the resort has a teens-only spot called Moods where you'll find pool tables, foosball tables, virtual reality simulators, and much more.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Restaurants
I've been to a number of all-inclusive resorts all around Mexico, and while the experiences are usually great, the food leaves a lot to be desired. It was just something I came to accept with all-inclusive stays. That was until I discovered Hyatt's all-inclusive resorts.
I am continually impressed by the food and drink offerings at the Ziva and Zilara resorts. While you might have a not-so-great meal every once in a while, the food is consistently far above average – and much better than the food I have had at any other all-inclusive resort.
All said, there are six restaurants, a full buffet, four bars, a coffee shop, and an ice cream and candy shop on-site at the Hyatt Ziva Cancún. There really is something for everyone.
El Mercado
El Mercado is the main buffet at the property, which serves classic breakfast, lunch, and different themed food each night for dinner. It’s open each day for breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11:00 am. It opens for lunch from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., and then again for dinner from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.
During my stay, the dinner themes were traditional Mexican food, Peruvian night, and Mexican street food.
I only ate here for breakfast on my last day. There are a ton of different options, but I opted for the omelet bar with a side of fruit which was delicious.
I also had to check out the cinnamon roll bar, which didn't disappoint.
There are plenty of great indoor and outdoor seating options at El Mercado, and if you want something to eat during your stay, there is a good chance this will be open, outside of a few two-hour windows throughout the day.
Tradewinds
Tradewinds is described as a relaxed grill by day and a classic steakhouse by night. It has fantastic oceanfront views, and besides the El Mercado buffet, it's the only restaurant that is also open for breakfast.
It’s open each day for breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11:00 am, and then again for dinner from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.
I had breakfast at Tradewinds on my first morning at the property and had a fantastic experience. Both the service and food were excellent.
I went with the green juice, the fruit plate, and the smoked salmon bagel with cream cheese, mint, pepper, grated egg, fried capers, and onions. It was served with a side salad with a citrus honey mustard dressing.
Lorenzo's
Lorenzo's is the Italian restaurant at the Hyatt Ziva Cancún, and it was my favorite meal I had during my stay.
It’s open each day for lunch from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., and then again for dinner from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. I had dinner here on my last night at the resort. Again, both the food and service were wonderful.
After I sat down, my server brought over an antipasto platter with meats, cheeses, fruits, and bread. Everything was delicious.
Next up was a Caprese salad with burrata cheese, tomatoes, basil pesto, and a little bit of olive oil. Very tasty.
And for my main course, I went with a Neopolitan style wood-fired pizza with Italian sausage and mushrooms. It was perfectly crispy and delicious.
Habaneros
If delicious tacos, ceviches, and tostadas are your thing, you'll want to head to Habaneros. This was another one of my favorite meals during my trip, and it is a great spot to take in the great views of the ocean while you eat lunch.
It’s open each day for lunch from noon until 5 p.m.
I visited Habaneros for lunch and went with the flank steak tacos and the ceviche tostadas. And of course, I had to wash it all down with a traditional mezcal margarita.
Absolutely no complaints. The service and food were both excellent.
Chevy's
Chevy's is described as classic American fare including appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and creative shakes and ice cream malts.
It’s open each day for lunch from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
The restaurant itself has a great 50's diner vibe, and though I didn't eat here myself, I did see a few of the meals from guests eating in their outdoor space that looks quite tasty.
The Moongate
The Moongate is the Asian restaurant at the resort with a full teppanyaki grill. It's open each night for dinner from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m.
But if you want to sit at the teppanyaki grill, you'll need to make a reservation. In fact, it is the only spot throughout the resort where you'll need to make a reservation to eat. I didn't dine at the Moongate myself but each night I walked by, it looks like the teppanyaki bar was the place to be.
La Bastille
La Bastille is the French restaurant at the resort, and it's also the only restaurant in which kids are not allowed. You'll need to be 18 or older to dine here. It was certainly the most formal restaurant at the property and from what I could see the dress code was being enforced.
No sandals, tennis shoes, or hats, and men need long pants and a collared shirt. Women will need a dress or jumpsuit (pants or shorts) and dress shoes.
The restaurant was open for dinner each night from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Pasteles
If you have a sweet tooth, you'll want to circle Pasteles on your map of the resort. The dessert parlor is open daily from noon to 11 p.m. and has just about anything you can imagine.
You'll find everything from cakes, to gummy bears to lollipops, to ice cream and gelato.
There was also a case full of fancier treats like cupcakes and mini pies.
Casa del Café
Casa del Café is the coffee shop on the resort and it was a great spot to get my days started.
The shop is open every day from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and serves up all of your favorite hot and iced coffee shop classics.
There is even a great spot to enjoy your drink or work. I spent a few hours each day at the long table to get some work done.
Just outside of Casa del Café, you'll find a churro stand each morning. A tasty little treat to enjoy with your coffee.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Bars
Saasil Bar
Saasil is the main cocktail bar at the resort and is open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. each day.
The bar has a list of complimentary cocktails as well as a list of signature cocktails with more premium alcohol that are $13 with a 15% surcharge for gratuity.
I visited Saasil twice during my stay for a pre-dinner cocktail and stuck to the complimentary cocktail list both times. On my first night, I had the Mexican Affair which had Aperol, Dubonnet, gin, mezcal, and bitters. It was a very good drink.
On my second trip, I had a signature margarita with mezcal in place of the tequila. No complaints.
During my stay, there were a few special events at Saasil including an hour-long mezcal and tequila tasting and mixology class. Sadly, you needed a reservation to attend and I didn't make the cut. I tried to reserve my spot the morning of the event and it was already full.
If you are interested in attending one of the events at Saasil, make sure to check the events calendar after you check-in and make your reservations early.
Tres CerveZa's
If craft cocktails aren't your thing, check out the resort's sports bar and brewpub – Tres CerveZa's. The bar is open daily from noon to 11 p.m. and it's a great place to catch a game or unwind for a beer and a bite to eat.
The bar brews two of their own beers on site. A hefeweizen and a brown ale. I sampled both on my first night at the resort and found them both to be surprisingly tasty.
While other Ziva and Zilara resorts I have been to have a sports bar, this is the first one I have seen brewing their own beer. A cool touch.
You'll also find a full food menu at Tres CerveZa's. I went with the tacos al pastor with marinated pork, onion, coriander & pineapple. Really tasty.
Dips & Sips
Dips & Sips is located in the main pool area and also doubles as the swim-up bar located in the main pool area. It's a great place to grab a drink. The bartenders were great and whipped up some really tasty drinks. As I mentioned earlier, one of the bartenders was making some incredible drinks here during my stay.
It opens each day at 11 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m.
Juana Margarita
Juana Margarita is the resort's tequila bar located on the first level not far from the El Mercado buffet. I stopped here for a drink on my second night at the resort and the bartender was very knowledgeable about tequila and made me a fantastic margarita.
The bar also doubles as a smoothie bar in the morning from 8:00 a.m. to noon.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Beach
If having a great beach is a must for your beach vacation, it's hard to beat the setup at the Hyatt Ziva Canún. Being it is located on the far northeast peninsula of the hotel zone, you'll have a few different options for enjoying the beach.
First, just past the main pool area, you'll find a smaller beachfront area with lounge chairs and a number of cabana options.
This is also where you will find the beachfront docks – and one is set up for massages.
If you want to get into the water, the beach located just past the pool on the backend of the resort is your best option. It's the main stretch of beach in the hotel zone which is very swimmable and walkable.
Hyatt Ziva Cancún Service
I cannot say enough good things about the service at the Hyatt Ziva Cancún. And that has been my experience at all of the Hyatt all-inclusive resorts I have visited.
Each and every employee I interacted with was genuine and warm, and very appreciative of tips that were well deserved. They truly seemed to care and were very invested in guests having a wonderful trip and experience.
In my opinion, it's certainly a big part of why the Ziva and Zilara resorts always get great reviews. From check-in to check-out and everything in between, I had absolutely no complaints.
The Hyatt Ziva staff truly elevated the experience.
COVID Testing to Return to the U.S.
The U.S. threw a major wrench in international travel earlier at the end of last year by requiring all passengers flying to the U.S. to present a negative COVID-19 test no more than one day before departure. And yes, that includes fully vaccinated Americans heading home from abroad. For now, that requirement still stands.
But the Ziva Cancún made this pretty easy and painless. Guests staying three or more nights will receive this test at no additional cost, while guests staying one or two nights will have to pay $600 pesos to test (about $29 to $30 USD).
The day before my return flight home I headed to the testing room, went over some quick paperwork, and got a test right onsite.
Once I was done with my testing, I was told that the results would be sent via email later that evening. Sure enough, I received the results as I was having dinner that night. And thankfully, I was negative which was my ticket to get back to the United States.
Overall, the process was well organized and pretty painless. It took about 15 minutes total.
Hopefully, this requirement is changed soon. But for now, Hyatt has made it a pretty well-oiled machine at their all-inclusive resorts.
How to Earn World of Hyatt Points
Don’t worry about earning Hyatt points to cover your all-inclusive stay. You don’t need to be a road warrior to rack up enough points for the Ziva and Zilara properties.
There are a few different credit cards that make earning Hyatt points relatively simple and straightforward.
First, you can earn World of Hyatt points by transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your Hyatt account. Because Hyatt is one of the airline and hotel transfer partners of Chase’s Ultimate Rewards program, you can transfer Ultimate Rewards points into your World of Hyatt account at a 1:1 ratio – 1,000 Chase points gets you 1,000 Hyatt points.
And if you don’t have Chase Ultimate Rewards points, they can be earned from a number of personal and business credit cards. Our favorite option: The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which is currently offering a welcome offer bonus of 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of card membership. That’s enough for another two free nights at the Hyatt Ziva Cancún resort, with some points left over.
This card also has an annual fee of $95 which is not waived in the first year of card membership. However, the welcome offer bonus alone is worth at least $750, and oftentimes much more. If you book two nights at one of these Hyatt all-inclusive properties, you could easily get more than $750 out of these points.

Then there is the World of Hyatt Credit Card. Just for opening the card and spending $3,000 in the first three months of card membership, you will receive 30,000 World of Hyatt points. You’ll also earn 2x points per dollar spent on up to $15,000 of spending in the first 6 months of card membership. That’s 60,000 points total – enough for two free nights at any of the Zilara and Ziva properties, including the Hyatt Ziva Cancún.
The card has a $95 annual fee which is not waived for the first year of card membership. But starting in year two, it offers an annual free night certificate to be used at any Hyatt category 1-4 property. Unfortunately, none of the Ziva and Zilara hotels are eligible for the free night certificate. Still, it’s reason enough to justify the annual fee.

Bottom Line
Simply put, the Hyatt Ziva Cancún is a great resort and a great way to spend a Cancún vacation. It's location in the hotel zone is definitely a more upbeat vibe than what you will find further south at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancún, but the facility itself is much more impressive. It has a little something for everybody and I can’t wait to return.
Best of all, it’s a truly excellent use of points and miles to book your all-inclusive stay for free.
This was a great overview of the Hyatt Ziva. Thanks
Really wanted to know about the rooms and the best part of the hotel to stay in. Close to the beach/pools. Any recommendations?
Hi Josie. Glad you enjoyed it. In terms of rooms by the pools and beaches, you really can’t go wrong. All of them are located in close proximity to both.
Hello, wondering if there is full service for drinks & foods from the pool and beach areas or do you need to reserve a cabana for that service? Thanks!
Hi Sheri. There is full food and drink service from the pools and beach with or without a cabana.
I’ve got 4 kids ages 7, 9, 12, and 13. Sounds like the kidz club would take care of the younger ones but is there something for my 13 year old and if there is would my 12 year old be able to be there too?
